Chapter 11

“Everybody ready?” the short, stocky alien asked as he walked over to the table and put one hand on my shoulder and the other on Alza’s. “I hope you didn’t fill up on this too much, because you’re going to need an appetite for revenge tonight!”

Tam laughed at his own joke so loudly that I flinched and leaned my head away.

“We’re ready,” Alza said, and she looked around the table. “Right, guys?”

“Always ready,” Pinto agreed with a nod.

“Just let me gather up a few things,” Crawly said, and he stood up and hurried out of the room.

“Hurry up, Crawly,” Tam hollered. “We’ve got to get a move on if we’re going to get my memento back before that asshole gets wind of our plan. He’s always trying to find out how I’m going to get him back next.”

The last sentence was directed at me, but I knew it was all bullshit. Tam could play the old fun rivalry bit all he wanted, but I wasn’t buying it. Everyone on his team had pretty much confirmed my suspicions. He was a mobster, and we weren’t going to that house to steal something back. We were going to steal some valuable item so that Tam could either sell it or simply add to his collection.

Either way, it definitely wasn’t all fun and games.

But he didn’t need to know that I knew that, so I just smiled and nodded to play along.

“Yup,” I said. “Crawly put a lot of effort into the plan, I’m sure it will go smoothly.”

“Of course it will.” Tam grinned. “I’ve got the best damn team anybody could have. And this being your first time and all, I know Alza will look out for you. You’re stronger than she is, so you just use that muscle and put your brain away. She’ll direct you every step of the way.”

“Got it,” I agreed with a forced smile.

God, this man was a dick.

I mean, I knew he only wanted me to join the team because he’d seen what I could do during the Aut chase, but he didn’t have to be so damn blatant about it. Apparently his nice guy facade was more difficult to keep up than he probably thought.

Or maybe it was just that I knew better now and so everything he did was tarnished with the knowledge of his falsehood.

Either way, I didn’t like the man, and I definitely didn’t like the way he had his hand on Alza’s shoulder. He treated her like he’d been the one to save her, like she owed him or something. But after hearing her story earlier, I doubted that was the case. She’d probably only taken a job with him for the money like the rest of us had.

“Oh, I almost forgot,” Tam said as he turned to me. “I left some clothes for you in the little room upstairs. You should go change. It’s about time to leave.”

“Alright,” I agreed, but I felt like he was only trying to get rid of me so he could talk to Alza.
